Data Center Operations Engineer

The role:


The Data Center Operations Engineer will be responsible for the support and delivery of data center services worldwide. Working within the Data Center Services team, the DC Operations Engineer will provide the necessary knowledge, expertise, and drive to deliver a professional high quality service in the delivery of Data Center services to Nokia. These services will range from day to day management of the environments, hardware installations and cabling, management of the facilities with the Datacenter vendors and managing other third parties.
In addition to delivering the services and creating the necessary supporting documentation, the individual will contribute to the team by improving working methodologies and practices where appropriate.

Qualifications/Requirements

• Ability for 24/7/365 work schedule including Open & flexible approach to working outside core business hours

• Ability and willingness to lift 50+ pounds regularly

• Bachelors degree ( Computing Science preferred)

• 8+ years of experience with the Internet Services industry

• 6+ years of relevant working experience in the following:

o Multi-site and Globally Distributed Datacenter environment

o Linux and Windows systems administration

o Hardware platform maintenance (HP, Dell, Cisco, Juniper, F5)

o Hardware monitoring tools (HP SIM, Dell Open Manage)

o Storage Technologies (Fibre Channel SAN, NAS)

o Network Technologies (Juniper, Cisco, F5)

• Strong analytical and strategic skills

• Current Driving License and Passport , and ability to travel 25%

• Excellent negotiation and communication skills

• Ability to succeed in a complex, virtual and international culture where change and speed are part of daily work

• Strong knowledge of ITSM platforms and how they relate to daily operations

• Knowledge of ITIL best practices (ITIL v3 Foundation certification preferred)

• Excellent knowledge of server, storage and network technical fault finding

• Demonstrable experience in, estimating capacity requirements, Network installation, Data cabling (CAT5, CAT6 & Fiber), hardware racking with power and data connectivity

The Role
This role will perform evaluation, development, deployment, and support of increasingly sophisticated automated services management systems. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of a Development Manager with a mission to rapidly and continuously improve Nokia’s capability to deploy mobile and web-based consumer and platform services.

To succeed in this role, the potential candidate will need a solid background and success in developing tools in a Linux and UNIX based systems environment with dynamic and scripting languages, TCP/IP networking skills, and a sense of customer centered support. This role requires someone who loves to instrument systems and extract every bit of available data for performance optimization and debugging.

Required Skills/Experience:
• Bachelors or higher in a relevant discipline
• 5+ years of success in JavaScript (ExtJS Framework), PHP , Perl OR Python
• 2+ years of experience working / developing on Unix or Linux based operating systems.
• 2+ years of working knowledge in Object oriented programming, SQL, databases and large data sets.
• 2+ years of success in development of commercial or open source service management and monitoring tools in Linux Internet Hosted Operations Environments.
• Experience in development of commercial or open source service management and monitoring tools
• Thorough understanding of tool building/development in operations environments (i.e. CMDB, Asset management…)
• Working Knowledge of SDLC methodologies, TCP/IP Protocol and application services
• High level of ability to understand and communicate technical knowledge in a team environment
• Experience working with source control, and continuous integration systems such as SVN, and Hudson.
• Occasional travel (less than 25%)

Preferred Skills

• BSC in Computer Science and/or Masters

• 10 + years in an Operations environment building server and tools for large scale data delivery

• 5-10 years of full SDLC

• Understanding of high availability system design

• Understanding of network based technologies such as Load balancers, and Global DNS.

• Developed or operated TCP/IP network protocols or infrastructure

• Architecture of Internet Services and/or Datacenter infrastructure

• Past success in developing frameworks

• Extensive management of Linux and UNIX-like systems knowledge
